Workshops (participants)
If you are interested in attending a workshop, you must submit a position paper to the workshop organizers. Position papers are reviewed by the workshop organizers using their own criteria, and workshop organizers decide on the final list of workshop participants. Workshops are only open to people who have had their position paper accepted by the workshop organizers, and who have registered for both the workshop and the MobileHCI conference. Workshop position papers will NOT be published in the (supplementary) conference proceedings.
Organizers of accepted workshops will be advised to adhere to the following dates, to make sure that workshop participants with accepted position papers can still benefit from early registration discounts for the MobileHCI 2008 conference. However, since workshop organizers are responsible for the review and acceptance process of workshop position papers, they can deviate from these suggested deadlines.
Important dates:
Monday 5 May 2008(passed): suggested deadline for Workshop position papers (passed for most workshops)Monday 19 May 2008(passed): suggested notification of acceptance for Workshop position papers (passed for most workshops)
Workshop W1
Mobile Interaction with the Real World
Niels Henze, OFFIS - Institute for Information Technology, Germany
Gregor Broll, University of Munich, Germany
Enrico Rukzio, Computing Department, Lancaster University, UK
Michael Rohs, Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, Germany
Andreas Zimmermann, Fraunhofer-Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT, Germany
Through the achievements in the last decade most people have a mobile device such as a mobile phone always with them. We use these devices for communication, accessing digital information or playing multimedia content. Typically mobile interaction addresses only the interaction between the user and his or her device. Using mobile devices as tools to interact with the environment offers new possibilities for the user and changes the user experience. This workshop addresses the implications of mobile interaction with the real world. Based on the successful previous workshops on mobile interaction with the real world we will deepen our understanding of this active research field.
Submission deadline: Monday 9 May 2008 (passed) (please check the workshop's website at http://www.offis.de/mirw08 for more information and updates).
Workshop W2
SiMPE: 3rd Workshop on Speech in Mobile and Pervasive Environments
A.A. Nanavati, IBM India Research Lab, New Delhi, India
N. Rajput, IBM India Research Lab, New Delhi, India
A.I. Rudnicky, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA
M. Turunen, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland
In the past, voice-based applications have been accessed using unintelligent telephone devices through Voice Browsers that reside on the server. With the proliferation of pervasive devices and the increase in their processing capabilities, client-side speech processing has been emerging as a viable alternative. In SiMPE 2008, the third in the series, we will continue to explore the various possibilities and issues that arise while enabling speech processing on resource-constrained, possibly mobile devices.
Submission deadline: Monday 5 May 2008, 11:59 CEST (passed) (please check the workshop's website at http://research.ihost.com/SiMPE/ for more information and updates).
Workshop W3
The 2nd International Workshop on Mobile Internet User Experience
Virpi Roto, Nokia Research Center, Finland
Eija Kaasinen, VTT, Technical Research Centre of Finland, Finland
Internet access on mobile devices changes the way the Internet is used. In addition to accessing ordinary Internet content with mobile devices, mobilizing the Internet enables totally new kinds of Internet content and services. This workshop will discuss the mobile Internet from the end user perspective, identifying factors and solutions that would make Internet usage on a mobile device an enjoyable experience.
Submission deadline: Monday 5 May 2008, 18:00 CEST (passed, contact the organizers about possible participation) (please check the workshop's website at http://wiki.research.nokia.com/index.php/MIUX08 for more information and updates).
Workshop W4
Co-design: Practices, Challenges and Lessons Learned
Marc Steen, TNO Information and Communication Technology, Delft, the Netherlands
Jenny de Boer, TNO Information and Communication Technology, Groningen, the Netherlands
Lilliane Kuiper-Hoyng, TNO Information and Communication Technology, Groningen, the Netherlands
Froukje Sleeswijk Visser, Delft University of Technology Studio Lab, Delft, the Netherlands
This workshop is about practices of co-design. The goals of this workshop are: to share experiences from diverse practices, to discuss benefits and challenges, and to jointly articulate lessons learned. We are interested in all sorts of efforts of researchers and designers to cooperate constructively with end-users and to let them influence our projects. Ideally, end-users are involved throughout a project and have active and diverse roles. With co-design we mean to include: user involvement, human-centred design approaches and approaches to constructively cooperating with customers, with people with technical backgrounds and with other stakeholders. Within the scope of the MobileHCI 2008 conference we will focus on co-design for developing mobile products or services and user evaluation in (mobile) contexts. Co-design for mobile applications is especially challenging because people use these in different and unpredictable contexts and for communication and cooperation, which introduces all sorts off social-cultural issues. Interested in participation? We invite practitioners to write and talk about their practices and about challenges which they encountered. We are interested in receiving positioning papers that describe co-design practices and in critical reflection on practices, e.g. in comparisons between approaches or in combinations of approaches.
Submission deadline: Thursday 5 June 2008, Midnight CEST (passed) (please check the workshop's website at http://codesign.jottit.com/ for more information and updates).
Workshop W5
The MobiMundi workshop (previous coded W5) has been merged with the MobileMultimedia workshop (previously coded W6). Accepted workshop participants will be informed by the W5 organizers about registration for W6.
Workshop W6 (combined workshop)
Mobile Multimedia - Content Creation and Use
combined with
MobiMundi: Exploring the Impact of Mobile Technologies on Citizen Media and Participatory Journalism
Jonna Häkkilä, Nokia Research Center, Oulu, Finland
Mirjana Spasojevic, Nokia Research Center, Palo Alto, US
Minna Isomursu, VTT, Oulu, Finland
Jenine Beekhuyzen, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia
Mark A.M. Kramer, University of Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria
Erika Reponen, Nokia Research Center, Tampere, Finland
Marianna Obrist, University of Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria
During recent years, mobile devices have become tools for versatile activities related to multimedia content. Especially mobile phones have emerged in this field, integrating the features of music players and digital and video cameras into mobile communication technologies. Multimedia messaging has followed text messaging, and Mobile TV is taking its steps towards large audiences. This workshop aims to gather researchers and practitioners who look at existing and anticipated end-user trends and usage culture in using and creating mobile multimedia content, as well as novel applications and ideas related to human computer interaction with mobile multimedia devices.
The MobiMundi part of the workshop aims to provide a forum for researchers and developers from different backgrounds to gather together to explore and discuss the impact of existing and emerging mobile information and communications technologies and services on society. The theme for this workshop will examine the real and potential impacts of user-generated mobile content on individuals and society as a whole. The individual and societal impacts discussed will primarily focus on user centred and social perspectives, but will also explore how user behaviour is changing and which problems are emerging, bearing in mind that individual actions are creating privacy and security issues which could lead towards a new quality of a hyper-surveillance society by providing the framework for the participatory panopticon. Moreover, mobile human-computer interaction and design related issues will be explored and considered in order to support users requirements to share and co-create mobile audiovisual content.
Submission deadline: Friday 16 May 2008, Midnight CEST (passed) (please check the workshop's website at http://research.nokia.com/projects/mobile_multimedia_content_creation_and_use for more information and updates).
